FAQ's & Tips

What is a test-only station?
Test-only smog stations are different from test-repair or gold shield stations in that test-only stations are only allowed to test cars; they cannot repair them. Any needed repairs must be performed elsewhere, at either a smog check station designated as a test-repair or gold shield station.

Why was my vehicle referred to a test-only station?
Your vehicle was likely selected as a high emitter profile vehicle. These are vehicle types designated by the Bureau of Automotive Repair as having high chances of failing the smog inspection. The High Emitter Profile (HEP) uses data from several different sources such as the state Vehicle Identification Database (VID), which collects data from each Smog Check performed in California. General vehicle data such as make, model-year, vehicle miles traveled, and engine size also help define the HEP.

In addition, as required by state law, two percent of the vehicles in all Enhanced Areas are also directed to Test-Only stations for their Smog Checks. These vehicles are selected randomly to evaluate the overall effectiveness of the Smog Check Program.

I am selling my vehicle, do I need a smog check?
Yes, the seller is responsible for providing a valid smog certificate at the time of delivery of the vehicle.

I am buying a vehicle, do I need a smog check?
The seller of the vehicle should provide a valid smog check certificate upon sale and delivery of the car. If you are buying a vehicle, make sure to ask the seller for the certificate, as you will not be able to register your vehicle without it.

How long is my smog check valid for?
A smog check is good for 90 days if you intend to sell your car. If the car does not change ownership, the smog check certificate is valid for two years until your next biennial somg check.

What happens if my vehicle doesn't pass?
At the conclusion of the smog test, we will give you a copy of the inspection report which shows your vehicle's test results. If your car was unable to pass, you must repair your vehicle at a test and repair station and then be retested for the certificate.

If you cannot afford the repairs, you may qualify for state assistance or an economic hardship extention. The extension is a one time only deferral of two years. If you do not wish to repair your vehicle, you may choose to sell it to the state for approximately $500.
